Che's Introduction to Inequality
In the beginning of 1950, after his third year of medical school, Che decided he should leave Buenos Aires to explore Argentina. At the age of just twenty-two, Che took a bike with a small engine attached and left for the Argentina interior. To the right, you see Che on that bike just moments before leaving. His journey would take him through many different Argentine cities, all the way to Jujuy, Argentina's northernmost city. While he had hoped to travel further north to Bolivia, poor weather and a lack of time forced him to turn back. Upon his return, it became clear that Che had been impacted tremendously by his journey as he experienced the social and economic issues so many felt. He explained that "tourist brochures for Jujuy" do not allow one to "know a country or find an interpretation of life" (Anderson 62). Instead, Che now saw that the country was better represented in the hospitals, police stations, and by the random passerby. During his excursion, Che Guevara met numerous persons who were part of that marginalized, forgotten interior that was seen as backwards. These people were not exposed to the European culture as he had been, and they had been forgotten because of it. He had experienced such a life for the first time, and it changed him forever.
